English Tourism Week: The Hidden Gems

English Tourism Week is a fantastic chance to celebrate the value and quality of tourism in England! From the 17th to the 25th of March, there will be plenty of opportunities to support local businesses and have a good time.

How can you do this? By exploring the many nooks and crannies that Silverdale (and the Lakes) have to offer or sampling local delicacies. So, get involved in this great initiative and be part of the celebration by getting to know the area and what it has to offer!

Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Lake District is famous for its incredible natural beauty (and recently made UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites), so you know there’ll be plenty to see and do in the area – including some hidden gems the whole family will love!

Silverdale is part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and you can also find the RSPB’s Leighton Moss nature reserve nearby, so natural beauty is only a step away. If you’re looking for a few quiet days away from the bustle of the city while surrounded by some of the country’s most stunning landscapes, Silverdale is for you!

Storth Geotrail

If hiking is a passion of yours, you’ll absolutely love to walk this 5km trail. You’ll hike through woods and quiet lanes and discover the fascinating geological features of the area. These geological wonders were formed when the seas deposited marine sediments in layers (which created limestone rock) that were later eroded by ice and rainwater.

Combined with the spectacular views across the Kent estuary, you are in for a fabulous day out in nature!

Heron Corn Mill

For history lovers, Heron Corn Mill is the perfect place to visit. This 18th century Grade II listed building and beloved local heritage site now offers an education, training and event programme that promotes community engagement. The Mill is powered by renewable energy too, as a 100kW Kaplan hydro turbine was installed fairly recently.

 

Stagshaw Garden

You don’t have to stick to just Silverdale when exploring the area, so why not pay a visit to the wonderful town of Ambleside as well? Nearby, you’ll find Stagshaw Garden, an informal woodland garden that is perfect to visit in the upcoming spring and summer seasons. With winding pathways and stunning combination of shrubs, trees, plants and flowers, you’ll feel like you’re in another world!

From camellias to rhododendrons, as well as bluebells and daffodils, this inspiring and enchanting garden will delight the whole family! Enjoy the tranquillity this garden offers and enjoy the gorgeous scenery out to the lake and mountains.

The Pepperpot

Eaves Wood National Trust is an ancient woodland area bursting with natural beauty, as well as rare plants and wildlife. When you visit this Silverdale area, don’t miss out on the chance of seeing the Pepperpot as well, a monument built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. The beautiful views extend to the Yorkshire Dales and Bowland Fells, so what better way to celebrate English Tourism Week than by enjoying these magnificent sights?

The lake itself is home to an abundance of fish species. These include the rare vendace and the atlantic salmon.  Not only this, but hundreds of birds including osprey migrate to the lake each year.
