How to Have The Perfect Winter Day Out in Silverdale

Silverdale is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year; as part of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there’s plenty to do and see. Many people flock to the area during the beautiful summer months, but not many consider the area when planning a day out during winter.

It’s not just a summer-only destination, and there are many reasons why Silverdale can make the perfect winter day out for all the family.

 

Magical Winter Walks

The area surrounding Silverdale is perfect for heading out and exploring. With plenty of stunning walks, a beautiful promenade and plenty of woodlands, there’s something for everyone.

It might be a bit cold, but a good brisk walk along the beach or up and around Arnside Knott will warm you up, and you’ll be rewarded with amazing wintery views over the bay. Make sure to take adequate walking footwear as, although the walk isn’t difficult, if the weather is wet, you’ll want to be wearing something on your feet that can grip and deal with the rain.

There’s also RSPB Leighton Moss nearby, the visitor’s centre of which is open during the winter season up until the end of November. You can still take a wander around this beautiful area and maybe catch a glimpse of some of the local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Take a wander around some of the astonishing woodland areas around Silverdale. There are plenty of different areas to explore, each creating the perfect winter walk – and a great opportunity for some crisp wintery photographs, too!

Shop Local

Silverdale is a quaint little village and has some very unique little shops that are just waiting to be discovered.

Take a wander around and maybe pick up some unique local crafts made by the people of Silverdale as stocking fillers and support the small community while doing so. Even if you venture a little bit out of the village, there are plenty of small businesses selling various gifts, foods and produce.

Find something a little different and get to know some of the locals, too at the Wolf House Gallery where you can buy handmade gifts and original art – or enjoy some coffee and delicious homemade cake!

Refresh Yourself

Speaking of tea and cake, there are plenty of cafes, pubs and bakeries in Silverdale. Whether you fancy some delicious traditional pub grub or just grab a small bite to eat during your day of exploring the area, Silverdale has it all.

They feature regular cruises for those who want to experience the lake’s wonder on water.    Windermere lake is just over a mile from the town of Windermere itself but the village of Bowness-on-Windermere sits on its shoreline in the centre of the lake. Both of these towns feature numerous bars and restaurants, so a trip to Windermere is not just a delight for your eyes, but for your taste buds!   There aren’t many lakes in Cumbria with such an array of activities. Whether that’s an exciting boat cruise or a nearby indoor climbing centre, you won’t be short of choice at Windermere!   For those staying at the Holgates Holiday Park in Silverdale, a trip to Lake Windermere takes just a 30 minute drive.   3. Bassenthwaite Lake   For lovers of animals and wildlife, Bassenthwaite lake is the perfect lake for you. The woods next to Bassenthwaite lake are home to the rare red squirrel. The lake itself is home to an abundance of fish species. These include the rare vendace and the atlantic salmon.  Not only this, but hundreds of birds including osprey migrate to the lake each year. A pair of binoculars is a must when visiting Bassenthwaite lake!   This beautiful lake is also home to a small open air theatre which was built in 1974. The poet Alfred Tennyson is thought to have composed much of his poem Morte d’Arthur in the place where the open air theatre lies.    Bassenthewaite lake is also one of the largest lakes in Cumbria stretching to 4 miles long! The Knott (6 Guests) At The Royal in Silverdale, we have two inviting cottages situated right on our doorstep in the heart of the Silverdale village. These cottages, lovingly known as The Knott and The Pepper Pot, draw their names from famous landmarks in the area and are the perfect accommodation for families and friends looking to explore the beautiful Lancashire countryside.  The Knott, situated just a 5-minute walk from the beach, is the larger of the two cottages. It sleeps up to six people across three bedrooms. The rooms consist of one King-sized master bedroom, a double room, and a twin room. This spacious holiday cottage has a large living area. It is adjoined by a kitchen ideal for entertaining guests and preparing large family meals. You’ll also find a dishwasher, washer-dryer, fridge-freezer, and a large dining table all at your disposal.  The living area is ideal for relaxing after a long hike or day out. The log burning stove adds ambience and warmth while the comfortable leather furniture, Wifi and television mean you can get access to your favourite Netflix series when you feel like having some downtime.  The main bathroom comes fitted with a bath and a shower as well as an accompanying downstairs toilet.
