Come and visit the Royal in the heart of Silverdale, a beautiful village on the Lancashire and Cumbria border. The Royal offers a great base to explore the surrounding area and coastline whilst also being a meeting point or fueling point for lunch or dinner.

If getting out and enjoying nature is your thing, then there’s no better destination than the coastline of Morecambe Bay.

If you are looking for a beautiful walk in the wonderful landscape or a wander through a wildlife-filled nature reserve Arnside and Silverdale has it all. Both are especially diverse when it comes to the wildlife we’re in the prime location to get the best nature experience around!

So where can you witness these local wildlife hotspots?

Arnside Knott

Arnside Knott is most popular in the summer months- mainly June and July- thanks to the abundance of butterflies that make the reserve their home. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of some of the rarest butterfly species in the UK, such as the High Brown Fritillary which makes an occasional appearance.

As it is owned by the National Trust, you can be sure that the environment that you find yourself in is well kept and beautiful, no matter what time of year you come for a visit. The views of the fells and out onto Morecambe Bay are not to be missed, too!

Eaves Wood

If you find yourself in the Silverdale area, be sure to head to Eaves Wood and discover one of the most beautiful natural areas in the country.

With so many various landscapes to uncover; from vast forest floors to the magnificent beech plantation and even the hidden grassy glades, there’s something to inspire and invigorate everyone.

There’s even a monument to visit, The Pepperpot, which was erected to celebrate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The surrounding area also gives an awe-inspiring view of the Yorkshire Dales and Bowland Fells.

Leighton Moss

If it’s a wide range of wildlife that you’re looking to see, then RSPB Leighton Moss is definitely the place for you. With species ranging from birds to the elusive red deer and even bats during the evening, there’s something to see all year round!

Leighton Moss is also a great place to take children. There are seasonal activities going on all year round and your little ones can become nature detectives for the day- perfect for those little ones who are already showing an interest in the wildlife around them.

Explore all its 10.5 mile glory onboard a Windermere Lake Cruise vessel. They feature regular cruises for those who want to experience the lake’s wonder on water.    Windermere lake is just over a mile from the town of Windermere itself but the village of Bowness-on-Windermere sits on its shoreline in the centre of the lake. Both of these towns feature numerous bars and restaurants, so a trip to Windermere is not just a delight for your eyes, but for your taste buds!   There aren’t many lakes in Cumbria with such an array of activities. Whether that’s an exciting boat cruise or a nearby indoor climbing centre, you won’t be short of choice at Windermere!   For those staying at the Holgates Holiday Park in Silverdale, a trip to Lake Windermere takes just a 30 minute drive.   3. Bassenthwaite Lake   For lovers of animals and wildlife, Bassenthwaite lake is the perfect lake for you. The woods next to Bassenthwaite lake are home to the rare red squirrel. The lake itself is home to an abundance of fish species. These include the rare vendace and the atlantic salmon.  Not only this, but hundreds of birds including osprey migrate to the lake each year. A pair of binoculars is a must when visiting Bassenthwaite lake!   This beautiful lake is also home to a small open air theatre which was built in 1974. The poet Alfred Tennyson is thought to have composed much of his poem Morte d’Arthur in the place where the open air theatre lies.    Bassenthewaite lake is also one of the largest lakes in Cumbria stretching to 4 miles long! The Knott (6 Guests) At The Royal in Silverdale, we have two inviting cottages situated right on our doorstep in the heart of the Silverdale village. These cottages, lovingly known as The Knott and The Pepper Pot, draw their names from famous landmarks in the area and are the perfect accommodation for families and friends looking to explore the beautiful Lancashire countryside.  The Knott, situated just a 5-minute walk from the beach, is the larger of the two cottages. It sleeps up to six people across three bedrooms. The rooms consist of one King-sized master bedroom, a double room, and a twin room. This spacious holiday cottage has a large living area. It is adjoined by a kitchen ideal for entertaining guests and preparing large family meals. You’ll also find a dishwasher, washer-dryer, fridge-freezer, and a large dining table all at your disposal.  The living area is ideal for relaxing after a long hike or day out. The log burning stove adds ambience and warmth while the comfortable leather furniture, Wifi and television mean you can get access to your favourite Netflix series when you feel like having some downtime.  The main bathroom comes fitted with a bath and a shower as well as an accompanying downstairs toilet. Outside you’ll find a private garden and garden furniture for barbecues and sundowners. The Pepper Pot (4 Guests) The Pepper Pot is the smaller cottage next door to The Knott. The AONB encompasses a diverse range of landscapes running from orchards and flowering meadows to ancient woodlands and the sands of Morecambe Bay. The beach stretching from Far Arnside in the north to Jenny Brown’s Point (south of Silverdale) is a stunning array of sandy shores and rocky outcrops that thousands of seafaring birds. Taking a stroll along the coast is a great day out and allows you to take in fantastic panoramic views at Jack Scout, Jenny Brown’s Point and Giants Seat. Leighton Hall If you’re looking for history then look no further than the gilded residence of Leighton Hall. This beautiful estate has been the historic seat of the Gillow family for generations with manicured gardens and a princely home that has remained largely unchanged for over 700 years. The Gillow family still live in the home and look forward to welcoming guests to their home. Leighton Hall is also great for outdoor excursions with the Woodland Walk, Herb Garden Pavillion, the Walled Garden, and the Main Garden providing a variety of pretty places to walk, relax, and snap a few photos for the family back home.
