This year it truly felt like that glorious summer would never end. But now we are officially into autumn and it’s time for chilly nights, gorgeous colours and fantastic food. Here at The Royal in Silverdale, we just love autumn. It’s the perfect time of year to visit Silverdale; this peaceful season is one of the most visually stunning, as the leaves turn from green to gold, orchards in places like Sizergh are ripe with fruit and the villages and towns are awash with autumn colours.
Here at The Royal, we are in the prime location to truly appreciate this beautiful season in the heart of Silverdale. There’re so many autumn events taking place in and around Silverdale for you to explore. Here are just a few of the upcoming events this autumn:
Birding for Beginners
Right in the heart of Silverdale is the RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve, home to the largest reed bed in the North West and a wide range of spectacular wildlife, including otters, bearded tits, marsh harriers, egrets and red deer. Autumn is a wonderful time to visit, as it brings a huge number of waders to the area, and visitors can catch a glimpse of rutting red deer on calm evenings. On the 28th October and 25th November, visitors can take part in Birding for Beginners, a wildlife talk where you can learn more about identifying wetland birds and why they choose Leighton Moss as their home.
The Magic of Light
Just a ten-minute drive from Silverdale in Yealand is The Magic of Light, an illustrated talk that explores the landscapes in and around the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Organised by the Arnside/Silverdale AONB Landscape Trust, this event takes place on the 1st November; Landscape Trust members can attend for free, but non-members are also welcome.
Arnside Country Market
Arnside is just a ten-minute drive from Silverdale, or a mere five minutes by train. Every Friday morning between 9:30 and 11:30 is the Arnside Country Market, a popular market that specialises in everything from delicious home baking and home-grown plants to jewellery and seasonal vegetables. Whilst the market takes place every Friday, it takes a winter break from mid-December until mid-February, so make sure you get down to Arnside this autumn, so you don’t miss out.
Annual Hedge-laying Competition
On the 3rd November, you can watch professional and amateur hedge layers from across the north of England test their skills in the annual hedge-laying competition. Whilst they are primarily used for enclosing land, hedgerows are also very important aspects of wildlife, providing a wonderful haven for declining bird populations as well as making fields stock-proof. The annual hedge-laying competition supports and encourages the retention of the skills necessary to look after hedgerows. Look out for the competitors in action in the field running alongside the B5782 between Carr Bank and Arnside.
Kendal Mountain Literature Festival
Literature has always had a home at the Kendal Mountain Festival; each year the festival offers a full programme of literary events, celebrating the very best landscape, nature and place writing. This year the event is running from the 15th to the 18th November, and Kendal is just half an hour’s drive from Silverdale. You can expect a diverse programme of events this year, featuring some of the UK’s foremost authors of nature, landscape and mountain literature. With over 40 authors, poets and writers, this year takes on the theme of ‘connections’ to explore the very best outdoor-inspired literature from across the UK.
Lancaster On Ice
Lancaster city centre is near Silverdale, just a 25-minute drive or a half-hour train journey. Lancaster On Ice is launching from the 22nd November for 6 weeks. A festive ice rink with a capacity of up to 200 skaters, this winter wonderland will be set up in the heart of Lancaster city centre in Dalton Square and will feature Bavarian-style food and drink concessions to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. Enjoy a hot chocolate or mulled wine alongside the sound of sizzling German sausages on the grill to warm you up after you’ve had your fill of skating fun.
Light Up Lancaster
Every year Lancaster plays host to Light Up Lancaster, two days of a magical, after-dark festival of art and light incorporating an annual fireworks event. This year, on the 2nd and 3rd November, you can explore Lancaster through the imagination of artists using the medium of light in all its forms. On the Saturday, you can enjoy the festival’s finale fireworks display which launches from the grounds of Lancaster Castle and lights up the skyline of the city. Wrap up warm and wander between the sites of illumination and experience this wonderful historic city at night.
